  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A Teacher -- I am very happy that inexpensive versions of Leaves of Grass are available ... : I am very happy that inexpensive versions of Leaves of Grass are available again. I have purchased eight different versions to compare. Many are very poorly put together - almost like scanned versions simply plopped into a word processor and uploaded to Amazon - and selling for $10 - $1. What I find most fascinating is this one - by Martino Fine Books (listed as Leaves of Grass ; {exact Facsimile of the 1855 Edition] - it is very fine, and is an exact facsimile. I love holding it and looking at it as close to the original 1855 edition as humanly possible. The only caveat is the cover - which features the older Walt, who had published six more versions by the time the cover photo was taken. No matter, the inside is what's important. Another one I bought that I recommend is from cholla needles press (listed as Leaves of Grass: 1855) - they use a facsimile of the original cover, and have made the choice to clean up the line breaks for readability purposes. The cholla edition is easy to sit down and read, the martino edition is beautiful to look at. The good news is I bought them both for less than $10 and find that reasonable enough to give them both to friends and relatives as gifts this year. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from CK -- Typographical errors in Wisehouse Classics edition : This review is only for the Wisehouse Classics edition. There are a number of typographical errors within the book. For instance, the word "of" is exchanged for the word "or" a number of times in "Song of Myself," altering the meaning of certain lines significantly. • from Zachary Littrell -- VINE VOICE : If you love Whitman, you'll love this. If you don't love Whitman, it's a LONG way to the end ( 3.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Nantucket Ron -- Kindle Buyer Beware : Kindle Buyer Beware! If you think you are buying the Library of America edition (which links to this Kindle version on the Amazon page) you are not. This is a completely different version. If you are looking, specifically, for the First Edition (1855) of Leaves of Grass - which is given prominence of place in the Library of America edition -- you will not find it here. As for the rest of the material, it may well be fine but it is NOT the Library of America -- a series renowned for its editorial care. It is, in fact, published by Heritage Illustrated Publishing from materials in the public domain. No essay by Justin Kaplan, no page numbers, and notably ugly typesetting. There are better Kindle general editions of Whitman's poetry for less (Bantam Classics, for instance). Amazon misleads its customers by putting this generic edition on the same page as the scholar-worthy Library version of which it claims to be a reproduction. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ferro -- Much overrated : Whitman’s rambling and disordered jottings mark him out as a droning egotist, bursting with a belief in his own superiority. He presents himself as a prophet or ‘seer”, a complete humanist who wishes to dispose of God and elevate the self- or himself- to Godlike status. Hence he comes out with “I myself am good fortune’, “I am as good as the best” or I celebrate myself”. Nowadays we recognize people like this as narcissists. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chuckp -- An American Classic : When I was in college, studying American poets in the same building where the Triangle Shirtwaist fire killed scores years earlier, I struggled mightily to read, decipher and appreciate Whitman. Now, almost 60 years later, I find his unique style and images to be a rich literary experience. I'm sorry I didn't grasp the power and beauty of Whitman back then, but I'm catching up now with this fine and free Kindle edition. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from fizzy5000 -- 10/10 book : Lovely book, used this for my english coursework and it was an enjoyable read. Whitman really encapsulates what it meant to be a common American man in his era and it makes sense why his influence is still prevalent in modern day America (Lana Del Rey). Hope his legacy lives on for he really is one of America's greatest poets. His free verse style allows the reader to be taken to wherever his mind wanders to, really great stuff. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from K701 -- Re: 1855 edition by Amereon Ltd. Rating for edition not Whitman's work : As Amazon still clump together reviews which could related to many different editions- this review is for the 1855 edition, brown/maroon cloth cover with gold inlay by Amereon Limited. I wanted a nice edition of this amazing work. This is not quite it. At first I thought it was a dreaded 'Print on Demand' book. It might well be, I don't know. The paper is ivory acid free and of a good weight. The inlay on the front is scrappy but passable. The huge let down is the print. It is not dark and crisp; it is computer printed text, exactly like the trusty Canon's used to print- in 1989. It is grey and undefined and strains the eyes after a while. Not £15 worth of book, that's for sure. Even my 5 year old printer at home prints superior text to this. What are they thinking? If I met a student studying Whitman, I would give them this copy to make notes in and buy myself a better one. I think I will have to anyway… The hunt goes on... • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Rani Ban -- It's a challenge! : I haven't read this slowly for years and years. Lots of re-reading and much quiet thought. A remarkable man, not easy, very challenging but well worth the effort. Takes the reader away from our consumer culture to something very profound, the transcendence of the self. Whitman tells you to carefully examine all that you have been told and to dismiss what insults your soul. Lots of thinking and reflecting needed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from kehs -- American poetry : I bought this book because it kept being referenced in a novel I recently read. The poems are the work of a very intelligent man. They made me slow my reading down to enable me to absorb what I was reading. Beautiful words that have stood the test of time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Morais -- A beautiful little book : A beautiful little book, it is hardback and covered in book binder's cloth, I love it ..... lovely to hold and to look at, and the contents inside are just a beautiful .. .I bought this as I was reading another book, "The Circling of the Sun" by Paula McCain and this is the book which Denys Finch Hatton gave to Beryl Markham when they first met, and which poems he rad to her, over 100 years ago ....
