:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from SCD -- A Fun & Interesting Series! : I recently finished the first book in the Cat Carlisle series and immediately delved into the second installment with 'The Family Secret.' It is also an excellent story with a smooth and easy to read narrative. The editing of this book is better than the first book, and the quality of the writing is of a consistently high quality. // The book has a very good mystery, and I did not 'figure out' who the 'villain' was until close to the end of the story. The (supposedly) main characters of Cat Carlisle and Thomas Charles continue to be well-developed and extremely likable. However, the characters that move the story forward are not Cat and/or Charles, and that's rather unusual for a book that's described as being 'about' the main characters of a series. In fact, the woman who is described in the book 'blurb' as being in need of Cat's assistance, because she is under suspicion by the police for murdering her Aunt, has an extremely minor part in the story. Also, although Cat and Charles have do have specific roles in this story it isn't really until the end of the book that they play a major part in the revelation of the mystery. I liked this story a lot, and I know I will read more of the Cat Carlisle series, but I hope Cat and Charles play larger parts in their next story. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019 )

Book 1 was good, however, Book 2 couldn't keep the story straight. Example: in book 1 Isobel commits suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills, leaving a letter confessing to Bentons murder. In book 2, apparently Isobel went to prison and hung herself 2 years later. While there are other inconsistencies, Bentons murder was a pretty important part of the story, I'd think getting the details right in the sequel would be pretty easy. As with the first book, I think the author wrote good character sketches and setting descriptions; however, I think plot development was weak. I knew the plot as soon as all of the characters were introduced. Definitely a cozy mystery. Absolutely an easy read. If you are not looking for a thriller to challenge you, this is your book. They soon find themselves involved in a mystery involving embezzlement and the death of two people. This was a good book although not the same as the first book. I was pleased that the main characters confirmed their relationship. The author's writing mechanics were excellent except for a weak plot. Still, I enjoyed the read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from b.j. allison -- Really enjoyed this book, will read more from this author. : First time reading this author and I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it was a good clean read (I do not suffer through foul language, graphic sex and violence), if I wanted that there are plenty of other venues and authors to choose from. For a little while I want to escape the crassness of the 21st Cn. Her heroine was strong minded but still very likable. I will read more of her books. This was the second in a series about Cat, an unlikely investigator and Thomas who is actually an investigator. They are in love but don’t acknowledge it (typical beach novel).
